Highlights of BAC accomplishments in October: The Safety, Education and Enforcement Committee held an Oct. 4 field meeting in conjunction with a memorial ceremony for cyclist Thomas Hollowell, struck and killed in September at 12th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. The committee recommended a number of safety improvements to lessen the hazards for bicyclists and pedestrians. A dozen bicyclists attended the Oct. 18 Facilities Committee rolling meeting in the Brookland/Columbia Heights Crosstown Protected Bike Lanes project area. Participants reviewed DDOT design alternatives and rode along designated streets to give feedback about the proposed cycletrack. Facilities Committee participants reviewed the maps at the start of the meeting. The rolling meeting stopped at an intersection to evaluate options. Photo: @ranpuba James Sebastian, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) bicycle program manager, issued an email this morning regarding the impact of this weekend's blizzard and the clearing of snow from the District's bicycle infrastructure. Key points: Much of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and Pennsylvania Avenue Protected bike lanes are clear. It could be several days before other trails and protected lanes are clear of snow Bike lanes on many streets will remain snow covered for several days as parked cars inhibit clearing DPW and DDOT crews are working to clear bridge sidewalks Capital Bikeshare is closed until further notice as crew work to clear snow from stations Use the 311 app to report uncleared facilities or email jim.sebastian@dc.gov Please see the full email below:

The final public meeting on the Florida Avenue NE study is set for Wednesday, April 2 beginning at 7pm at the Two Rivers Charter School , 1234 4th Street NE, (Middle School Building). Bicyclists and pedestrians should attend to help determine the best way Florida Avenue can accommodate a variety of road uses. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is hosting the third and final public meeting to guide the Florida Avenue Multimodal Transportation study, which assesses the potential reconfiguration of the Florida Avenue corridor from North Capitol Street to Benning Road NE. The sidewalk sections from 6th Street to West Virginia Avenue particularly narrow with street lights, signage, and steps restricting sidewalk egress. As the WeMoveDC process begins its transition from the information gathering to the planning stage, the ideas that they've gathered from thousands of District residents are now coming together - on maps. In anticipation of WeMoveDC's third round of  Workshops – Ideas to moveDC - beginning October 21, BAC has obtained a draft version of the WeMoveDC maps that list ideas and approached for the District's bicycle facilities (displayed below). There are a lot of moving parts in this process, but thanks to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), we now have maps that break them into component as well as composite maps. BAC would like #BikeDC to look at these maps and either tell us what you think or tell WeMoveDC at its upcoming meetings. We'd also like you to note if anything should be included, for example, with all these new routes, what about safe, secure bicycle parking? Last month, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) made changes to the proposed M Street NW cycle track. The changes removed the cycle track portion between 15th and 16th Streets NW and replaced it with a bicycle lane. The bimonthly BAC meeting is Wednesday, September 4, beginning at 6pm. BAC will discuss reports from our subcommittees and other bike-related topics including the status of bicycle facilities by the District Department of Transportation. The meeting will take place at 441 4th Street, NW at One Judiciary Square, in Room 1114, which is on the 11th floor. Please remember to bring government identification to enter the building. To get to the meeting room, please use the South lobby elevators. Bicycle parking is available in front of the building please remember to also bring your bike lock.
