Highlights of BAC accomplishments in July: The BAC held its bimonthly meeting on July 11. Members answered the Councilmember’s questions and explained why the BAC supports the legislation. Highlights of BAC accomplishments in October: Through its Facilities Committee, the BAC focused on Ward 4. The committee conducted a "rolling" meeting on Oct. 21 to survey parts of the ward and make recommendations to increase safe travel for bicyclists and pedestrians. The ride visited the convergence of Blair Road, Kansas Avenue, North Dakota Avenue and Peabody Street NW to suggest ways to redesign this complicated intersection. The ride surveyed streets that would comprise part of the Metropolitan Branch Trail, topic of discussion at recent Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4B meetings. The Metropolitan Police Department will hold a Community Bike Ride this Sunday, April 10, 2016. The ride will begin at 10 a.m at the Takoma Metro Station, 327 Cedar Street, NW. Supported by the Department’s First, Fourth, and Fifth Districts, the ride will cover Wards 2, 4, 5, and 6. There will be a bicycle rodeo for children at 1st and L Streets, NE, where there will be bike games, a skills course and an obstacle course.

Below are images of the installation of a new traffic signal near the 5200 block of North Capitol Street as it crosses Hamilton Street. The signal will allow bicyclists to use Hamilton Street eastbound and Gallatin Street westbound instead of using Gallatin as a bi-directional bicycle sharrow on a one-way vehicular street. The installation of the traffic signal will also allow pedestrians, bicyclists and cars to cross North Capitol street, which can be difficult due to heavy traffic in the blocks between Missouri Avenue and Gallatin Street and the relatively high rate of vehicle speed during off-peek travel hours.

On Saturday 6/23, the DC BAC Facilities Committee explored bike accessibility and connectivity to commercial areas along Georgia Avenue. Building walkable and bikeable communities is an important part of supporting local jobs - but to make it work, we need to make sure that people can get to commercial areas easily. Please join the Bicycle Advisory Council's Facilities Committee (BAC-FAC) on a ride or 'rolling meeting' on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The ride will beginning at 1:30 PM near the Capital BikeShare station at the corner of 9th Street and Upshur NW. On this ride, the Committee will examine bike accessibility and connectivity to commercial  areas in Ward 4, particularly along Georgia Avenue NW and including the Walter Reed and Walmart development sites. BAC-FAC would like your thoughts on what bicycling facilities should be considered for this area and your concerns about road safety, signage or other issues.
