Ride to celebrate the life of Marvin Gaye

This Saturday, April 2, 2011,  marks the celebration of Marvin Gaye. What better way to do that than to have a 26-mile bike tour of the area where he was born and raised -- right here in the District.

The Mt. Rainier Bike CO-OP is sponsoring the free Marvin Gaye Day Bike Tour and celebration, which will commence at its shop, 3601 Bunker Hill RD, Mt.  Rainier, MD 20712 at 11:00a.

The 26-mile ride will begin around noon, traversing areas of the District that were touched by Marvin which include his birth place, his high school, his homes and dwellings -one where a new bike shop is opening at Central Avenue and Maryland Park Drive: Maryland Park Bicycles.

The ride will consist of ride of difficult roads, bike lanes, trails, and some hills but nothing too harsh.  The ride will stop at the following locations and approximate times:
  • WHUR at 12:30p
  • Cardozo High School by 1:30p
  • Lincoln Park by 2:30p
  • 46th/F St SE by 3:30p
  • Capitol Heights Metro Station by 4:30p
  • Maryland Park Bicycles Grand Opening. -101 Maryland Park, MD- by 5p
  • Mount Rainier Bike CO-OP by 7:30p
If you cannot ride the entire distance or the entire time, join them at any of the stops above.  According to the ride organizers, if it's raining at noon, the ride will alter becoming a straight shot to MD Park Bicycles' Grand opening.

Also, if you have problems with your bike, the CO-OP asks that you bring out this weekend and have the Bike CO-OP make repairs.  For more information about the event go to the CO-OP website or contact Mike Turner at 240-461-7026.

Below is a Google map showing 32 new Capital Bikeshare locations ( Blue pins ) and 18 current stations that will see expansion ( red pins ), most of which should be installed by the fall of 2011.  According to a press release issued by goDCgo , the District Department of Transportation Director Terry Bellamy states that, " With this expansion we will not only increase the overall reach of the system, but we will expand the program’s capacity by 22 percent in the downtown area, by 80 percent in our East of the River operations and by an average of 38 percent throughout each of the additional Wards .” Most of the new locations add capacity in the system's core but CaBi appears to also expanded east of the Anacostia River in the neighborhoods of Fairfax Village, Benning Ridge, Congress Heights and downtown Anacostia. Areas not receiving new or expanded stations include upper regions of Ward 3,  4, and 5. View New (Blue) and Expanded (Red) CaBi Bike Stations in a l...
